New cards will be added to the Magic: The Gathering — FINAL FANTASY set on December 5th. In anticipation of their release, we would like to introduce you to some of the new cards themed after FINAL FANTASY IX!
The first card we would like to showcase today can be found in the Chocobo Bundle: the adorable Choco, Seeker of Paradise!
Choco is a supporting character in FFIX who joins the protagonist, Zidane, on his journey in order to seek out Chocobo’s Paradise, the rumored utopia of chocobo-kind. Not only can he act as a steed for the player to ride across the world map, he can also dig up treasure with his shiny beak!
Choco, Seeker of Paradise makes a return in the Chocobo Bundle with a brand-new illustration. Furthermore, the cards within this bundle include the Chocobo Track Foil edition card, a unique foil pattern that looks like chocobo footprints.
The Chocobo Bundle contains more cards with new illustrations made just for the bundle. Please look forward to its release!
Next up are six cards from the Magic: The Gathering — FINAL FANTASY IX Scene Box — The Siege of Alexandria: “Brilliant Wings,” “Judgment of Alexander,” “Mega Flare,” “Amarant Coral,” “Vivi’s Persistence,” and “Search for Dagger.”
All of these cards can be played individually, but when combined, the artwork comes together to depict a larger scene!
The combined illustration depicts when Dagger, whose true name is Garnet, calls upon the power of the great eidolon Alexander to defend her home, the Kingdom of Alexandria, from Bahamut’s onslaught.
While Dagger is fighting to protect Alexandria, Zidane's group makes its way from the surrounding town towards the castle to help her. This illustration doesn't depict a scene straight from the game itself, but rather, brings to life a situation that was occurring parallel to the main character's journey—akin to a cinematic shot of a different side of the same story.
Scene Boxes contain many iconic scenes from across the FINAL FANTASY franchise. Please enjoy their illustrations alongside the gameplay!

We talked A LOT about what scene in FINAL FANTASY IX to pick from, because we knew we had to do a FFIX scene with so many fans of the series working on this project. I eventually asked, "What's the cutscene you remember most?" And by a wide margin, most people recollected when Alexander and Bahamut battled throughout Alexandria. I was like, "Great! Let's do that!" Two massive Eidolons duking out is great background content (so we could appreciate the scale) but would happen in the foreground? Well, technically, Zidane and the party crash landed in Alexandria during the battle and eventually we saw them collect themselves to go find Dagger, but I kind of wanted to see the moment of crashlanding, like the party sprinting through the fire and debris of the invasion, I thought it would make for some good visual drama! And we got a chance to make a card for Amarant here, which I was so happy about!

For the FFIX Scene I knew I would need an artist who could handle a tough compositional challenge—essentially capturing two separate action scenes in one awesome image. As if that wasn’t tough enough, one of the action scenes showcases small to people-sized characters, and the other goes nuts with epic-scale creatures! Artist Erion Makuo handles this well, delivering a Scene where each character looks fun and active on their own, and the composition holds together wonderfully as a whole.

FINAL FANTASY IX
Strange events transpire on the Mist Continent, one of the four main lands of Gaia. The kingdom of Alexandria, ruled by Queen Brahne, begins their invasion of other nations under orders of Kuja, the "angel of death" from Terra. An accidental encounter in Alexandria brings Zidane, Vivi, and Garnet together, and they set out on a journey that leads them to discover the secrets of their past, the crystal, and a place to call home.
