Once again, we bring you new card introductions from FFTCG producer Taro Kageyama and comments on their art from the illustrators who drew them!
A Sneak Peek at Emissaries of Light
Hello everyone! This is FFTCG producer Taro Kageyama. As always, I’ll be introducing a few new cards today. They are from our 16th booster pack, Emissaries of Light, and will be released on Friday, April 15. I hope you enjoy reading until the end. This time, there are four cards I want to tell you about: Black Waltz 1 (16-027C), Black Waltz 2 (16-007R), and Black Waltz 3 (16-088L) drawn by Rubi Asami, as well as Luneth (16-019R) drawn by Toshitaka Matsuda. Let’s have a look at Ms. Asami’s Black Waltzes first.

Ms. Asami has provided us with different ways of presenting these cards. This Black Waltz series has three versions: normal, premium, and premium full art without text borders (henceforth “full art”). Each design is unique in its own little way. The premium version has border decorations that the normal version does not, which is even more magnificent in the full art version. A lot of attention went into how these cards shine as well. Normally, premium and full art versions of FFTCG cards have shiny backgrounds. This time, it’s the character that shines. As you can see, the Black Waltzes have a stained-glass design, and making them shine creates a different impact than what we’ve experienced with previous cards. Unfortunately, the difference is difficult to discern with an image on the internet, so I hope you can see it with your own eyes. It’s quite chic and atmospheric. This is also the first time Black Waltz 1 will be a card.
In the game, their abilities are related to the Black Mage job, and the three Waltzes are compatible enough to be put into the same deck. Each of them has a different attribute, however, making it a little difficult to build a deck, but their abilities are worth facing the challenge, so I urge you to give it a try.

The Black Waltzes are very memorable enemies from FFIX. I think they have many fans, but there aren’t many official illustrations of them, so I couldn’t decide how I wanted to portray them. While I was watching playthroughs and movies, I remembered enjoying certain scenes and felt like playing it over again from the beginning. That’s when inspiration hit me. I hope that gazing at the illustrations can bring back your own memories of the story.
Luneth [16-019R]
Next up, we have Luneth (16-019R) by Toshitaka Matsuda. Mr. Matsuda also illustrated Refia (10-128L), another main character from FINAL FANTASY III, and has drawn this card in the same portrait style that extends past the borders of the cards. It’s a very beautiful design that depicts light shining on the right side of Luneth’s turned face and shows that shadow follows wherever you go. I can’t say for sure yet because it hasn’t happened, but in the future, I’d like the remaining two main characters—Arc and Ingus—to be drawn in this style.
As for what this card can do, you can choose between two different auto-abilities that trigger at the start of the Attack Phase during your turn. Both are easy-to-use abilities related to the Warrior of Light job, but the second one is especially damaging, so you can gain a greater edge over your opponent with each passing turn. Since both Warriors of Light and Fire Characters are counted toward damage, you can deal devastating blows with this card.

Luneth is a young man with a harsh fate who is embroiled in battle but refuses to give in. Instead, he faces everything with positivity and cheer. To capture that gentle yet strong image, I wanted him to gaze straight on with a small smile. However, Luneth is also a warrior who puts his life on the line, so I had him hold a sword at the bottom of the frame and included his characteristic garb behind it.
I wanted it to match the impression given off by the Refia card I illustrated previously. I drew them with varying touches, but I hope you can enjoy them as a whole.
Today, I introduced cards by Ms. Asami and Mr. Matsuda, but there are many more incredible cards in the new booster pack, Emissaries of Light. I hope you look forward to its launch on April 15!
