The long-awaited Magic: The Gathering — FINAL FANTASY set will soon release on June 13! In anticipation of this exciting event, we're introducing some of the cards in the set – sixteen articles for sixteen mainline games in the series!
The elements we showcase here range from iconic characters to defining moments—aspects that encompass the essence of the FINAL FANTASY franchise.
For our fourth showcase, we’d like to show you one card from FINAL FANTASY IV.
Cecil Harvey, the protagonist of FINAL FANTASY IV, is an accomplished Dark Knight and the captain of the Kingdom of Baron’s airship fleet known as the Red Wings. Growing suspicious of the motives behind the king’s cruel orders, Cecil defects from the kingdom and embarks on a soul-searching journey that has him gradually transform from a wielder of the dark arts to a holy Paladin.
“Cecil, Dark Knight” is a two-sided card, featuring his counterpart “Cecil, Redeemed Paladin” on the other side. It does well in capturing the two faces of Cecil Harvey, coming to terms with who he was in the past and who he sets out to be in the future.

Cecil, Dark Knight
One of my favorite FINAL FANTASY characters of all time! Cecil's journey from Dark Knight to Paladin really shaped my earliest understanding of how video games can explore the concept of narrative in ways other media cannot. This card is aggressive, risky, and hurts you as you play it - a lot like the flavor of being a Dark Knight. We depicted Cecil using his "Darkness" ability in his art. Not only is it an iconic ability of his, but I always thought the original pixel art of his move was so cool! I was excited to bring Cecil and his Darkness alive in our set's art.
Magic: The Gathering — FINAL FANTASY will be available for purchase on June 13. Until then, why not come (re-)familiarize yourself with the world of FINAL FANTASY? FINAL FANTASY IV
The kingdom of Baron continues its conquest of neighboring nations with the unsurpassed might of its airship squadrons. The Crystals are the true targets, although the kingdom's plans for them remain unclear. Cecil Harvey, commander of the Red Wings, has been ordered to deliver the Carnelian Signet to the village of Mist. However, King Baron's motives are far more sinister than Cecil could have suspected...
Cecil soon finds himself in a battle to protect his loved ones, to discover his true identity, and to deliver the world from destruction.
