Magic: The Gathering — FINAL FANTASY Card Showcase Part 15 (FINAL FANTASY XV)

The long-awaited Magic: The Gathering — FINAL FANTASY set will soon release on June 13! In anticipation of this exciting event, we're introducing some of the cards in the set – sixteen articles for sixteen mainline games in the series!

The elements we showcase here range from iconic characters to defining moments—aspects that encompass the essence of the FINAL FANTASY franchise.

For our fifteenth showcase, we’d like to show you a few cards from FINAL FANTASY XV.

To start us off are “Plains” and “Sidequest: Catch a Fish!”
In FFXV, the main characters usually travel in a black car named the Regalia. One of many moments from their travels is depicted in “Plains,” where the sleek vehicle can be seen traveling down a long road. The main protagonist, Noctis, also enjoys fishing as a hobby, taking a detour every so often to fish at a nearby lake or river.

Next up, we have “Cooking Campsite” and “Instant Ramen.”
If lodgings aren’t available, the main party can take a rest in the great outdoors by setting up campsites. Once set up, they can cook a variety of dishes to replenish the party—one of which is instant ramen. Though it’s certainly a familiar dish for many of us, eating those types of food in different environments can be a different type of fun.

Our last two cards today are “Noctis, Prince of Lucis” and “Ardyn, the Usurper!”
They feature Noctis, the aforementioned protagonist, and Ardyn, a mysterious man he meets during his journey. Noctis can manifest and wield special weapons thanks to his royal blood, though he must consume some of his own life force to do so. This exchange is reflected in the abilities of his card.

Ardyn also has a unique ability whose effects are replicated on his card.

See their special abilities in action and learn what strange thread of fate connects these two characters by giving FFXV a try!

We’ve received some additional comments on one of today’s cards from Magic: The Gathering’s very own Principle Narrative Game Designer: Dillon Deveney! Enjoy his commentary below.

Instant Ramen
I mean, come on, you know we had to do it! Gladiolus loves his instant ramen. Who are we to deny him from his favorite snack? Food is such an important part of FINAL FANTASY XV's identity and we wanted to show it off in a few places. But this concept got its very own card out of sheer delight.

Sidequest: Catch a Fish / Cooking Campsite
Not only is Noctis the Prince of Lucis, but he's the King of Fishing! Fishing and cooking are iconic minigames and immersive experiences in FINAL FANTASY XV. This card is a delightful reference and exploration of that two-part experience. The quiet moments were some of my favorites in this game, so this was a really fun card to work on. The front side of the card sets up the backside of the card, just like catching a fish sets up your dinner for the night!

Noctis, Prince of Lucis
I think Noctis has one of the coolest visualizations of his powers in the series. Unlocking the Royal Arms towards the end of the game felt so cool, so powerful, and so epic! I wanted to show the iconic moment where he summons the Royal Arms to his side, and can you imagine him leaping into a big fight hacking and slashing his way to victory. His mechanics allow you to cast artifact spells in your graveyard, because this tells the story of Noctis communing with the king's previous weapons in the Royal Tombs, using weapons of the past in the present!

Ardyn, the Usurper
Ardyn's powers and magic were PERFECT to make a card around. Wielding the Starscourge, Ardyn can turn other living beings into daemons, which for us was a perfect mechanical story to tell! Ardyn can exile cards from the graveyard to make big demon tokens, which gives Ardyn a powerful army to make to finally claim his throne.

Magic: The Gathering — FINAL FANTASY will be available for purchase on June 13. Until then, why not come (re-)familiarize yourself with the world of FINAL FANTASY? If you simply can’t wait, be among the first to play with the collaboration cards via prerelease at authorized retailers come Friday, June 6!

FINAL FANTASY XV
To the east, there stood Lucis—a sanctified kingdom, blessed with the divine Crystal and sacred ring. To the west, there rose Niflheim—an imperial war-machine driven by superior technology and the arcane might of magitek. For long, the two have been at war.

More than a century has passed since Lucis raised a magical wall to stanch the empire's march toward the Crown City of Insomnia. In time, those behind the Wall came to know peace and leisure, having all but forgotten the horrors of war.
