FFTCG Dreamlike Oceans Sneak Peek!

The FFTCG, enjoyed by players all over the world, is getting a new booster pack titled “Dreamlike Oceans” on Friday, March 27th!
We’ve decided to give you all a first look at two of the new cards here on the FF Portal Site.

We also have a message to share from FFTCG producer, Tarou Kageyama as well as the illustrators who handled the cards’ art.

A Sneak Peek at Dreamlike Oceans

Hello, everyone! This is FFTCG producer Tarou Kageyama.

Approximately once every four months, I take this opportunity to highlight some of the FFTCG cards contained within the upcoming set before their official release. Thanks once again for tuning in! This time, I'd like to talk about two cards from Dreamlike Oceans, on sale starting Friday, March 27th. If this is the first FFTCG article you’ve seen, these are some cards that you’re sure to love.

[28-013L] Tifa

The first card I'd like to introduce is Tifa [28-013L], illustrated by Miki Yamashita. It was drawn in the style of FINAL FANTASY VII ADVENT CHILDREN. You can see how captivating her expression is, and fear not, there's a full art version of this card illustration available as well. I’ll post them both.

What do you think? Yamashita has done may illustrations for our trading cards in the past, and this one of Tifa is just as splendid as her other fabulous work.

Now that we've appreciated the design of the card, let's take a look at its stats. Tifa [28-013L] is a Fire element Forward with a cost of 3 and a power of 7000. She has three abilities: Brave (a keyword ability that means she won't get the Dull status when attacking), an auto-ability that triggers once she enters the field, and an action ability that you can play for the price of 2 Crystals.

Tifa's auto-ability inflicts 4000 damage for each Category VII Forward in play. Since Tifa [28-013L] herself counts, you'll deal at least 4000 damage when she enters the field. If two other cards in play qualify, you can do 12000 damage, which is enough to fell most Forwards. There are a lot of ways to fulfill these conditions, so it's a pretty strong card.

It costs 2 Crystals to use her action ability. In FFTCG, Crystals are a different resource from the usual CP cost, but these Crystal types of abilities tend to be more powerful. If you can create a deck that can easily accumulate Crystals, you can do a ton of damage with these abilities.

Tifa [28-013L]'s ability adds 2000 power and Haste. She can attack twice in one turn. As I mentioned above, she also has Brave, so once she enters the field, she'll be able to attack twice and deal devastating damage—it's quite an impressive ability. Just remember that no matter how many times you use this ability, it caps at two attacks per turn. But it still adds 2000 power, so there's a lot of payoff regardless.

Tifa's auto-ability and action ability pack a huge punch, so you can expect her to be a beneficial addition to your Category VII deck in the future.

【Comments from the Illustrator: Miki Yamashita】

The FINAL FANTASY VII ADVENT CHILDREN movie was so cool and gritty, I tried to include that clinical, inorganic feeling in this card. If you look at Tifa's face, her usually kind expression has fallen. That was something I wanted to highlight.

[28-095L] Lumina

Now it's time for the second card I wanted to introduce to everyone. This character from LIGHTNING RETURNS: FINAL FANTASY XIII was drawn by Toshitaka Matsuda. It's the famously mysterious and ominously striking young girl, Lumina [28-095L].

Matsuda's Lumina illustration shows the character’s depth and more. He's drawn many FFXIII-related FFTCG cards up until now, and you can see how this matches his other works perfectly. Be sure to check out all of his cards.

Let's take a look at Lumina [28-095L]'s stats. Lumina is a Forward with a cost of 2 and a power of 5000. But even so, she's got an auto-ability that can break Forwards with its EX Burst effect, as well as an action ability that can claim a card from the Break Zone.

As long as the cost of the Forward you use this ability on is less than the number of Category XIII cards you control, you can break it. It's harder to break a Forward with a high cost, but this card itself is a character that counts toward your total, as do your Backups and Monsters. There are a lot of Monsters in the Category XIII cards, so you can often take down a card with a cost of 3 or 4. Sometimes you can even manage Forwards that cost up to 5.

For the action ability, you may dull the character and discard one Category XIII card, but in exchange you can add one Category XIII card to your hand from the Break Zone. This ability cannot be used on the turn the card enters your field, as the card must be dulled to activate it. But it can let you reuse summons from Category XIII, or offset the cost of special abilities for cards like Lightning [16-124H].

Both of her abilities are useful in decks heavy on the Category XIII cards, so she'll work great for both Standard decks and Title decks.

【Comments from the Illustrator: Toshitaka Matsuda】

I was a part of the development team for the game Lumina first appeared in, LIGHTNING RETURNS: FINAL FANTASY XIII. I couldn't help but reminisce about those days while I drew this.

I'm glad I had this opportunity to do an illustration for Lumina. The scene where she sits on the throne is quite memorable, so I recreated that situation for this card. I also attempted to channel her defiance and all those secrets lurking inside her mind into her expression... How'd I do?

Oh, and I was actually the one who got to create the original throne design, so it was nice getting to revisit that. (LOL)

Those are the two cards I wanted to talk about today. What do you think? They’re very collectable cards, as well as useful from a player's perspective. That’s it for this edition, I’ll see you again for another booster pack showcase!

What is FFTCG?

FFTCG is a one-on-one tactical card game featuring FINAL FANTASY characters and summons. Not only is there fun in collecting cards featuring familiar faces, the main draw of the game is the simplicity of the rules combined with the complexity of the gameplay. The art drawn for the game by famed illustrators is also a popular aspect of FFTCG!
