FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE will be released on April 10th, 2020! Leading up to that, we’ve covered various key terms and concepts associated with FINAL FANTASY VII to prep for the big day. In the sixth and final chapter of this series, we’re going to look at what materia is.
In the world of FINAL FANTASY VII, the energy flowing through the planet can be harvested to create mako that powers facilities and such. (Check out the previous entry in this series to learn about the company that invented this method―Shinra.)
When highly concentrated mako crystalizes, orbs of materia are formed. Some materia can grant the wielder the ability to harness offensive magic―such as Fire, Blizzard, and so on―while other orbs can imbue your equipment with an element of magic, giving you a fire-kissed sword or an ice-warding bracer!

Certain materia will even allow you to conjure powerful entities, such as Ifrit and Shiva!

In FINAL FANTASY VII, summons assist the party with one massive attack, but in FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, they appear on the battlefield and fight alongside your party. There should be lots of new ways to strategize with the new summon system!
Materia can have many other effects, but we’ll have to wait until tomorrow’s release to see what FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE has in store in that department...!
